Memories to Last a Lifetime
Hobos roam the streets of Brookings one weekend every fall in celebration of South Dakota State University’s annual homecoming celebration—Hobo Day. This event began in 1912 and has grown to be the “biggest one-day event in South Dakota,” complete with a parade, tailgating celebration, and, of course, a football game. The event brings in tens of thousands of alumni and friends from across the nation.
The Brookings Summer Arts Festival, held the second full weekend in July of each year, attracts nearly 100,000 visitors to the area to participate in the excitement of the region’s largest outdoor arts festival. From hand-breaded onion rings to fine works of art, visitors can find just about anything to suit their fancy. Live performances from local and national performers and a children’s craft area make this event a favorite outing for families from near and far.
Several surrounding towns hold annual community-wide celebrations that include parades, softball tournaments, and street dances. These events provide visitors with unique cultural experiences and memories to last a lifetime.
