Elkton

The railroad’s arrival in 1880 spawned the development of Elkton and its’ entrepreneurial spirit. In 1896, facing a shortage of currency experienced across the country, Elkton took it upon themselves to locally address the issue by creating their own coins. The very same year, Henry Heintz obtained a patent and built a machine that lifted off the ground. 1921 proved to be a prosperous year as Samuel Salkin and Joseph Linoff started the first S & L Store in Elkton. Eventually the two businessmen moved the store to Minneapolis and developed a national chain.

Today, Elkton continues to thrive as a small rural community. A branch of Twin City Fan & Blowers is the largest employer in the community. Small businesses succeed because of the personal service exemplified by local employees and the progressive nature of the community to support local businesses in the area.
