Fiber-to-the-Premise

Brookings Municipal Utilities and Swiftel Communications embarked on a major telecommunications project to install fiber optic cable to every house and business within city limits. Over 70% of the premises in Brookings are served by fiber optic cable, with an additional 750 premises completed in 2007 and 800 in 2008.

BMU plans to begin bringing the fiber network online in the fall of 2007 when it launches digital television service. At the same time, customers’ telephone and internet services will be transitioned from the existing copper wires to fiber lines.
