Water

The City of Brookings receives its water supply from two main underground aquifers. The first provides up to four million gallons of treated water to the East Treatment Plant each day.


Brookings Municipal Utilities maintains a second water treatment plant one mile north of the City. Its water source is also from an underground aquifer that provides 3.5 million gallons of treated water to Brookings each day.


Total storage at the plants is 4.5 million gallons. Four water towers are located in the city with a combined storage of 1.65 million gallons.


Sewer

The Brookings Wastewater Treatment Plant is located three miles south of the city. It is a modern, extended aeration, activated sludge treatment plant. The wastewater plant and interceptor line system was constructed in 1980.

The 6 MGD plant utilizes rotating biological contactors, activated sludge and sand filters and has consistently met all EPA standards. The collection system is made up of 84 miles of pipe and 4 lift stations.
