Clean, Efficient Power at Your Fingertips

Brookings Municipal Utilities (BMU) provides electric service to the City of Brookings and operates the distribution system.

BMU purchases approximately 40 percent of its power from Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) with power coming from dams along the Missouri River. The other 60 percent of Brookings’ power needs are supplied by Missouri River Energy Services (MRES). The primary source of power for MRES is a coal-fired power plant in Wheatland, WY called Laramie River Station. Laramie River Station has been named one of the most efficient, cleanest operating power plants in the U.S. for the past several years.

Power is delivered to approximately 7,500 customers at very affordable rates. BMU’s delivery capacity is approximately 70 MW with a current peak of 45 MW. The transmission and distribution systems along with the substations are well-maintained and not in need of major upgrades in the foreseeable future.
